According to the 2021 Global Climate Risk Index, Afghanistan is the fifth most exposed country to climate hazards and one of the least prepared for climate shocks.

In recent years, weather anomalies have become more frequent in Afghanistan, leading to loss of livelihoods, damage to homes and infrastructure and, as a result, deterioration of living conditions for the population. In addition, Afghanistan’s high dependence on agriculture, low levels of socio-economic development and the effects of more than four decades of war make the country extremely vulnerable to threats posed by global warming. Droughts are likely to become the norm in many parts of the country, with infrequent rainfall only leading to floods and landslides. The consequences will be serious not only for the lives of Afghans, but also for economic development and food security.

The climate of Afghanistan: what they write about it in textbooks

Afghanistan has a harsh climate. Perhaps one of the harshest on Earth. It combines high snow-capped mountains next to fertile valleys and vast deserts. This country has a lot of extreme temperatures. Thus, the record high and record low temperatures recorded during meteorological observations in Afghanistan are separated by more than 100ºC. There is no other country where such a difference was recorded.

However, the extremes in Afghanistan are not limited to just temperature. Afghanistan ranks 6th in the world in terms of the difference between the lowest and highest geographical points (7,234 meters). Afghanistan is also one of 44 landlocked countries in the world, which explains why the lowest point in the country is well above sea level (a phenomenon observed in only a few countries).

The climate of Afghanistan is difficult to compare with any other place on Earth. Although many believe that it is closest to the climate of Colorado, the climate of Kabul has much in common with Denver.

Due to the rich diversity of relief, different parts of the country have their own climate – from subtropical continental in Jalalabad to mountainous arid in Kabul. In Afghanistan, the amplitude of temperature fluctuations is very high, it changes quickly, and the transitions from winter to summer, from night to day are just as fast. Regions with high humidity are located in the southeast of the country, where under the influence of the Indian monsoon up to 800 mm of precipitation falls per year, while in the rest of the territory – no more than 370-400 mm.

Cereal crops grow on the desert landscapes and dry steppes of Afghanistan, and on the mountain slopes, interspersed with thorny bushes, wild almonds and pistachios grow, and brightly and lushly flowering tamarix can be found. Spotted hyenas, jackals, wild donkeys, swift-footed gazelles and saigas are found here. Irbis, or snow leopards, mountain goats and Afghan tigers live in mountainous areas, in walnut forests and pomegranate groves.

At an altitude of 2000-3000 meters above sea level, birch, pine, honeysuckle, hawthorn and currant trees grow, and at an altitude of 4000 meters there are alpine meadows. Predatory kites, vulture hawks, kestrel falcons, golden eagles and Himalayan vultures fly over the expanses of Afghanistan, and catfish, carp, trout and other commercial species are found in rivers rich in fish.

On May 11, the UN office announced the death of 300 people due to floods in Afghanistan.
