The accident with a fuel oil spill into the sea happened on the morning of December 15, a young guy, a motorman, died. By the night of December 17, fuel oil began to wash up on the shores in the area of Veselovka (Temryuk district, Krasnodar region), Blagoveshchenka, Vityazevo, and in Anapa itself. In the area of Utrish, a federal reserve, fuel oil was discovered on the 20th.
Fuel oil leaking from the sunken bow of the tanker continued for several more days. The wind changed, polluting the sandy beaches of Volna. The village of Blagoveshchenskaya and Vityazevo were hit a second time. The fuel oil spill was pulled to the Crimean side, washed up on the beaches south of Kerch, and contaminated birds are being found in the city itself.
Birds were the first to stir up the whole country, volunteers, and volunteer assistants. After all, during a similar accident with fuel oil in the Kerch Strait in November 2007, more than 35 thousand birds died, including those listed in the Red Book. If the fuel oil stain, which was visible on a satellite image 2 days ago, does not spread to the Taman-Zaporozhye ornithological reserve, then, I hope, we will get off easy.
The number of dead and injured birds is in the first thousands. It is difficult to say whether they died earlier or from other causes, there are professionals who are currently working on this.
This tragedy has stirred up volunteers from all over the country. According to experts, a total of four fuel oil tanks were destroyed. The damage is concentrated along the break line of the ships, while the rest of the tankers’ hulls have no visible damage. Experts confirmed that fuel oil leaks have not been recorded at the moment, but the consequences of the accident are already causing serious environmental problems, NIA Ecology reports .

The Krasnodar Territory Operational Headquarters, led by First Vice-Governor Igor Galas, reported that about 2.4 thousand tons of fuel oil had spilled into the sea. This volume was significantly lower than the initial estimates given by the tanker captains. However, the scale of the damage remains impressive: M100 fuel oil spilled in the waters of the Kerch Strait has already reached the coastline.

The properties of heavy fuel oil M100, which was the first to cause such a major accident, are particularly complex. As stated by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Transport, citing the Marine Rescue Service, this type of fuel oil solidifies at a temperature of +25℃, its density is close to the density of water, which makes the substance heavier than other oil products. Unlike oil and light oil products, fuel oil M100 does not float to the surface of the water, but settles to the bottom or remains in the water column. Because of this, standard methods of cleaning water areas are practically useless here.

Photo: Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Crimea

At the meeting of the Operational Headquarters, it was decided to create a special working group of scientists and experts. Their task is to select the most effective methods for cleaning beaches contaminated with fuel oil. For this purpose, technologies proposed by licensed enterprises are being considered, taking into account the chemical composition of M100. One of the priority tasks is cleaning sand, which is collected from the shore and temporarily stored at special sites. The main goal is to return the cleaned sand to the beaches. The group will also study methods for cleaning pebble and rocky beaches, which are most susceptible to pollution.

The situation remains tense. A state of emergency has been declared on the coast of Anapa, and a federal emergency has been declared in Krasnodar Krai. This measure will allow additional resources and funding to be attracted from the government’s reserve fund. Experts note that developing technologies to remove fuel oil from water requires not only time, but also significant scientific efforts.

Photo: Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Crimea

The December 15 tanker wreck in the Black Sea was an unexpected blow to the region’s ecology. Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 sank in a severe storm when the vessels found themselves in a zone of critical turbulence. Immediately after the accident, a local emergency regime was introduced in Anapa, then a regional one, which was soon raised to a federal one. The scale of the pollution and the unique type of oil product make this accident unprecedented, requiring new approaches to eliminating the consequences.

The sea, polluted with fuel oil after the wreck of tankers near the Kerch Strait, will be cleaned up thanks to bacteria, but this could take several decades, Sergei Bolotin, head of the Department of Geoecology and Nature Management at Kuban State University, told RIA Novosti.

“If the fuel oil remains on the bottom, cleaning will take several years, and maybe even several decades.
