An island of garbage floating in the ocean, the size of California, can be seen from space. This was confirmed by Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko.
Kornienko made two space flights to the ISS, including an annual one in 2015-2016: “I ask everyone: bring the plastic bag to the trash can. Because the plastic island that floats in the ocean is the size of California – it is really visible,” reports ria .ru.
The UN announced the fight against marine debris and cleaning up the world’s oceans: the coasts of many developing countries are littered with plastic bottles, fishing gear and all kinds of packaging; During the pandemic, the mountains of this garbage were replenished with disposable masks and gloves.
The availability of waste collection facilities in the ports of poor countries will be checked, awareness-raising activities will be carried out for workers in the shipping and fishing sectors, and the latest technologies for recycling plastic products will be introduced.
Measures are being planned to ensure that fishing gear is marked so that its owner can be identified if it is lost or thrown into the sea. The GloLitter project will focus on reducing plastic use in the maritime transport and fishing sectors.
