Tropical Storm Mega made landfall on the islands of Samar, Biliran and Leyte in the eastern Philippines on April 10-12. As efforts continue to restore disaster-stricken areas, rescuers are finding more bodies, news agencies report.
The cyclone spread to nine regions. More than 395.9 thousand people were moved to 909 evacuation centers, 33.4 thousand people were evacuated in advance. 8 people were injured by the disaster, 110 are listed as missing. The highest number of deaths was in the Eastern Visayas region – 156, with another 11 in the Western Visayas region, 3 in Davao and 2 in the Central Visayas region.
To date, the death toll has risen to 224, more than 2 million people were affected by the disaster, according to a report by the Philippine National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. According to the council’s report, 2,081,011 people were affected by the tropical storm, forcing more than 175,000 people to flee their homes. At the same time, 76 settlements are still experiencing power outages.
Storm Mega damaged 9.7 thousand houses, the preliminary amount of damage was $13.5 thousand. 517 floods and 88 landslides were recorded. Damage to agriculture is estimated at $4.78 million. As a result of the disaster, 240 roads and nine bridges were damaged. Interruptions in electricity and water supply have been recorded. Mega damaged 10.5 thousand houses, 760 buildings were completely destroyed.
