January 5 marked the 55th anniversary of one of the most shocking, and even shocking, rock musicians in the world. Brian Hugh Warner, better known as Marilyn Manson, celebrates his birthday. Over the years of its activity – and the Marilyn Manson group was founded back in 1989 – its leader and only permanent member has gained a reputation as a fan of the cult of Satanism, which mocks people, mocks traditional values, and has a bad influence on young people: in a word, a person for whom nothing is sacred. That did not, however, prevent many of the band’s albums from achieving gold and platinum status.
Over the past few years, Marilyn Manson’s name has been linked to allegations of sexual violence and abuse of women. After Manson’s ex-fiancée, actress Evan Rachel Wood, and four other women made allegations in 2021, Manson’s record label Loma Vista Recordings, as well as his talent agency and personal agent, cut ties with the musician. Manson himself, against whom a dozen people have now brought various charges, denied the facts of sexual violence against former girlfriends; his ex-wife Dita Von Teese and girlfriend Rose McGowan also stated that they did not remember anything like this during the years of their relationship.
The veracity of the allegations – particularly that Manson had a room in his house with soundproof walls where he locked his girls and abused them – has yet to be determined in court. However, even without this, over the course of his 35-year career, the artist has accumulated many scandalous incidents. He even talked about some of them himself in his autobiography. The stage name that Brian Hugh Warner chose for himself consists of a famous first and last name. Marilyn – in honor of the sex symbol of the 50s, and indeed the entire 20th century, actress Marilyn Monroe. Manson is the surname of an American villain, the founder of a cult named after himself, who inspired his followers to commit one of the most brutal murders, Charles Manson.

The pseudonym is patented – the musician himself spoke about this twice in interviews, in 2013 and 2015. “I trademarked the name Marilyn Manson in the same way as Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. This is not a stage name. And not my real one. “Marilyn Manson belongs to Brian Warner, that’s my real name,” he told reporters at the Cannes Lions festival. Parents, by the way, preferred to call the musician differently. It is known that his mother retained the habit of addressing him as Brian, and his father simply called him Manson, explaining this with “respect for the artist.”
In 1994, after a concert in Jacksonville, Florida, Marilyn Manson was arrested. The artist was accused of urinating on a crowd of fans. This became a reason to charge him with violating the city Code of Artistic Performances in front of an adult audience. The artist spent the night behind bars, was examined by a psychiatrist and was released. In 1995, at a concert in San Francisco, Manson shocked the audience – although his audience was obviously not the most impressionable. In front of his fans, he broke a beer bottle and swiped it across his chest with a sweeping gesture. In memory of this, the singer was left with a huge scar. Why he did this, he never explained. One thing is clear – it’s definitely not worth repeating after him.
Also in 1995, the artist stated in an interview that he once had the opportunity to consume ground human bones. According to Manson, he obtained them from a cemetery in New Orleans, simply by digging them out of a grave. Taking the bones to his hotel room, the artist, with the help of friends, crushed them so that it could be inhaled into the lungs. However, he did not like the experience. “It was terrible. It smelled like burnt hair, caused a very severe headache, and my eyes turned red,” the performer complained.
In 1994, in San Francisco, during a joint tour with Nine Inch Nails, Manson was invited to a meeting with the founder of the Church of Satan, Anton Sandor LaVey. At the end of this rendezvous, LaVey told the artist: “I want to make you a reverend.” Manson received a scarlet card indicating that he is a minister of a satanic cult. “It was like an honorary diploma from the university,” he later wrote in his autobiography.
In 1997, Marilyn Manson wrote the foreword to LaVey’s book Satan Spokes! (some of the latter’s materials are recognized as extremist in Russia). In it, he wrote that the head of the “church” shared “his magic” with him and this made it possible to make this “wretched planet” a better place. Later, the artist repeatedly stated that he preferred Satan to God. “For me, Satan completely embodies rebellion. Lucifer was an angel who was thrown out of heaven because he wanted to be God. Which great hero do you think I prefer to identify with?” he told ABC News.
The cover of Marilyn Manson’s 1998 album Mechanical Animals was so provocative that major American retail chains – Kmart, Walmart – refused to put the record on their shelves. Another chain, Target, placed a special warning mark on the disk. “We are a family store,” department store representatives explained. On the cover, Manson was depicted in an extremely strange, somewhat alien-looking costume.
In 1998, Spin magazine editor Craig Marks met Manson backstage at a concert in New York, and he attacked him with threats. According to an MTV journalist, the artist screamed: “I will kill you, I will kill your family, I will kill everyone you know!” while two of Manson’s bodyguards pinned him against the wall. The reason for the aggression, according to Marks, was the refusal to put Manson on the cover of the publication, although this had previously been promised. The performer himself subsequently called the incident a conversation about “immature business management.” Marx filed a $24 million lawsuit against Manson. Manson sued in response, accusing the magazine editor of libel.
