Hans Zimmer is a composer, author of music for popular films (“The Dark Knight”, “Angels and Demons”, “The Da Vinci Code”, etc.). Winner of an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Score (The Lion King, 1994), Zimmer received his second Golden Globe for the score for the film Gladiator (2010). The composer was also nominated multiple times for an Oscar for his compositions for the films “Rain Man”, “The Priest’s Wife”, “As Good As It Gets”, “The Thin Red Line”, “The Prince of Egypt”, “Sherlock Holmes”, “Inception”. In 2010, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hans Florian Zimmer was born on September 12, 1957 in the German city of Frankfurt. Hans lost his father early. As he admits, music helped him cope with grief, which became “his best friend.” While still a teenager, Hans moved to the UK. There, the gifted young man began by playing keyboards and synthesizers in two groups at once – Ultravox and The Buggles, and also, together with a friend, taught the English how to play the guitar. At the age of 24, Hans wrote the single “Video Killed the Radio Star,” which launched the MTV channel.
In 1984, 27-year-old Zimmer made his debut as a film composer in Jerzy Skolimowski’s film Success is the Best Revenge, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or. Already at the beginning of his career, in the 80-90s, Zimmer became in great demand: he attracted directors primarily because he talentedly combined new and old musical technologies (for example, electronic music in combination with traditional orchestral music). When director Barry Levinson asked Hans to compose the score for his drama Rain Man (1988), Zimmer was already a fairly popular film composer.
“When coming up with the music for Rain Man, I kept telling myself: don’t try to drown out the characters. Don’t go to the forefront. Raymond, the main character, doesn’t really understand where he is. He sees the world differently than we do… Why not create “world music” for a world that exists only in his head?” – Hans recalls. This work became a real breakthrough in his career – Zimmer received an Oscar nomination. Hollywood’s top directors lined up to work with him. And Hans devoted himself to his work completely, often coming up with musical themes for two or three paintings at the same time.
While working on the film The Power of Personality (1992), the composer even went to South Africa to use African national choirs in the soundtrack. His music impressed the Disney studio so much that they commissioned Zimmer to compose the composition for the animated film “The Lion King” (1994). But Hans was no longer allowed into South Africa, so he called South African musician Lebo M to America. The musical theme of the cartoon brought the composer three prestigious awards – Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy. Zimmer went on to receive numerous awards, becoming truly the best of the best in Hollywood. It’s rare that an Oscar ceremony is complete without a Zimmer nominee.
He is the author of music for many popular films: “Mission Impossible 2”, “The Rock”, “Gladiator”, “The Prince of Egypt”, “Pearl Harbor”, “The Thin Red Line”, “Black Hawk Down”, “Madagascar”, “ The Da Vinci Code”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”, “Batman Begins”, “The Dark Knight”, “Inception”. In America, Hans founded his own studio, Remote Control Productions, which helps young composers (Steve Jablonski, Jeff Zanelli, etc.).
Hans Zimmer, 55, lives in Los Angeles with his wife and four children. “I think I have a good sense of the spirit of the times,” he admits. – Now I want to work with three, four notes, which are laid out in a complex, intricate emotional structure. With emotionality, not sentimentality.”
