Satellite images revealed the scale of destruction in Jamaica in early November. The devastating impact of the Category 5 storm on populated areas can be seen through satellite imagery.
The most noticeable impact is visible in images of the southwestern coastal port of Black River. Comparing a satellite image taken on February 9 with one taken on October 29 after the storm struck, one can see a gaping hole where the distinctive white roof of the building housing the market once stood. Just to the north, a cafe has been obliterated. At the top of the image, the red roof of a warehouse has disappeared. The outline of a fire station near the market is still visible, but the top of the building appears to have been blown away. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called Black River “ground zero” after sharing video of the devastation there.
Photos of White House, a fishing village of several thousand people on the west coast of Jamaica, show the extensive damage it sustained when winds reached 185 mph (83 m/s). Nearly every building appears to have been damaged or destroyed. In particular, buildings near the beach appear to have been completely leveled. These include the Marva’s and Pelican Lookout restaurants. The top of a large circular building is currently missing, and inland, along the main road, a cluster of shops suffered significant damage. Fishing boats in the bay, visible on satellite imagery on October 7, have disappeared.

The shoreline along this stretch of the northwest coast has been inundated by floodwaters, which are now engulfing the beach. Authorities report that facilities at the port and industrial park have been flooded. A container terminal, an oil storage facility, a nearby water treatment plant, and a sports complex have been severely damaged. Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon called the area “devastated” and added that locals are doing their best to look after each other. Montego Bay is a popular cruise ship anchorage and home to golf courses and resorts adjacent to its usually pristine white sands.

The central state of Hidalgo was hardest hit, with 22 confirmed deaths, approximately 1,000 homes damaged, and 90 communities inaccessible to rescuers. In the state of Puebla, the death toll stands at at least nine, with tens of thousands of people affected.

Five deaths were confirmed in the eastern state of Veracruz, and one in central Querétaro. In Puebla, authorities say approximately 80,000 people were affected by the extreme weather.

The main disaster area is the Sierra Madre Oriental, a mountain range along the Gulf of Mexico that is home to numerous small communities, including some where access for rescuers is limited due to roads washed out or destroyed by landslides.
Meteorologists attribute the increased precipitation to a seasonal shift: warm, moist air from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico rose toward the mountains and condensed, forming vast cloud masses. A cold front also formed over the country from the north, increasing precipitation over a larger area.
Mexico has already recorded record levels of rainfall in 2025, particularly in the capital, indicating a trend of increasing weather instability in the region.
